8/18/2023 Rep. O’Brien congratulates, praises outgoing CCRI President Hughes
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien offered his sincerest congratulations to outgoing Community College of Rhode Island President Meghan L. Hughes on her accomplishments during her seven years leading the college.

“Under President Hughes’ leadership, CCRI has greatly expanded its accessibility, enabling more hardworking Rhode Islanders to earn their college degree. She has been a truly dedicated public servant to our state, and a wonderfully collaborative partner with other state leaders. Coordinating with her to establish the P-TECH program at North Providence High School remains one of my proudest moments as a state official, and I am deeply indebted to her for all work in bringing it about. I wish President Hughes the absolute best in the future, and I know that she will be remembered with great admiration for all of her contributions to CCRI and our state,” said Representative O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence).

Legislation (2013-H 6290) enacted in 2013 and sponsored by Representative O’Brien enables students to enroll at a college or university as non-degree students and have the courses recognized toward degree completion at both the college and high school level. North Providence High School’s P-TECH curriculum integrates high school classes, collegiate coursework through CCRI and workplace learning experiences centered on the health sciences to prepare students for careers in high-growth, high-wage industries. Representative O’Brien is a truancy officer in the Providence school system and has seen firsthand the opportunities his legislation has opened up for students.

“On behalf of the students of North Providence who have benefited from this program, and the generations of Rhode Islanders whose futures are and will be brighter because of the leaps forward that CCRI has made under President Hughes’ leadership, I thank her from the bottom of my heart,” said Representative O’Brien.
