6/5/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday for several votes
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, June 6 at 3:45 p.m. in Room 135 of the State House to consider the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2023-H 5226A, 2023-H 0121A, sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence) and Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), creates a new section which provides a streamlined adoption process for children born through assisted reproduction and who need adoption to confirm, not establish, their legal parentage to protect them against discrimination in all jurisdictions.
  • 2023-H 5922, sponsored by Rep. Raymond A. Hull (D-Dist. 6, Providence, North Providence), provides that Schedules I through V of the Uniform Controlled Substances Act consist of drugs and other substances, by whatever official name, common or usual name, chemical name or name designated by the director of the Department of Health.
  • 2023-H 5923A, sponsored by Rep. Brandon Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston), amends law on controlled substances to permit a person to possess less than 1 ounce of psilocybin and would allow psilocybin to be cultivated at a person's residence for personal use.
  • 2023-H 6201, sponsored by Rep. Matthew S. Dawson (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), allows for a property owner who fails to comply with lead hazard mitigation provisions to be subject to damages and reasonable attorneys' fees.
  • 2023-H 6238, sponsored by Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence), establishes an escrow account for tenants to deposit their rent whenever the leased property is not compliant with the lead hazard risk reduction provisions in state law.
  • 2023-H 6239, sponsored by Rep. Mia A. Ackerman (D-Dist. 45, Cumberland, Lincoln), requires landlords to register certain identifying information on a statewide registry and for pre-1978 properties, provide a valid certificate of conformance with the lead hazard mitigation act.
  • 2023-H 5216, sponsored by Rep. Patricia A. Serpa (D-Dist. 27, West Warwick, Coventry), extends the "lookback" period for repeat offenses involving driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and for repeat offenses related to failure or refusal to submit to chemical tests from 5 years to 10 years.
The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, on i3Broadband on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.  The meeting will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
