5/30/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Finance Committee meets today to consider advice and consents, votes and to hear legislation
STATE HOUSE — The Senate Finance Committee will meet today to consider two appointments, several votes and to hear legislation.

The committee is chaired by Sen. Louis P. DiPalma (D-Dist. 12, Middletown, Little Compton, Newport, Tiverton).

Today, Tuesday, May 30 at the RISE of the Senate (approximately 5 p.m.) in Room 211 of the State House, the committee will consider the advice and consent of Vahid Ownjazayeri to be reappointed to the Rhode Island Infrastructure Bank.  The committee will also consider the appointment of Randy R. Rossi to the Public Finance Management Board.

Among the legislation scheduled to be considered are the following bills:
  • 2023-S 0230, sponsored by Sen. Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), extends IOD benefits to police officers/firefighters suffering from post-traumatic stress injuries/provides municipal police/firefighters retiring due to PTSI accidental disability retirement allowance.
  • 2023-S 0223, sponsored by Sen. Alana M. DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown, New Shoreham), allows anyone who rendered services as a correction officer to receive pension credit for service as a state or municipal employee.
  • 2023-S 0555, sponsored by Sen. Valarie J. Lawson (D-Dist. 14, East Providence), transfers the tax exemption classification to a surviving spouse until remarriage or death.
Among the legislation being heard are the following bills:
  • 2023-S 1085, sponsored by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence), creates the Rhode Island Life Science Hub, a quasi-public corporate body and agency of the state to coordinate life science initiatives on behalf of Rhode Island.
  • 2023-S 0086, sponsored by Sen. Frank A. Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston), enables school teachers, state and municipal employees to retire earlier.
  • 2023-S 1071, sponsored by Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), establishes a new, temporary process in the Department of Children, Youth and Families for the hiring of social workers and child protective investigators at the department for a one year period commencing on August 1, 2023.
