5/3/2023 Media Advisory: Legislators to take a spin on e-bikes at State House tomorrow
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Rebecca Kislak and the Rhode Island Bike Coalition are hosting an electric bicycle demonstration for legislators tomorrow, Thursday, May 4, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. in the lower parking lot of the State House.

The demonstration will provide legislators with an opportunity to ride e-bikes and interact with people who already ride them. Legend Bicycle, Trek, and Mission Electric Bike are supplying bicycles for the demonstration.

The media is welcome to attend. Please note, there is no media parking inside the parking lot.

Representative Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence) is the sponsor of legislation (2023-H 5220) to adopt standards that have been passed in 39 other states to regulate the use of e-bikes on roads and bike paths. The legislation, which the House Corporations Committee yesterday recommended for passage, updates Rhode Island law to reflect modern electric bicycles and establishes that they are to be considered bicycles, not motor vehicles, in the eyes of the law. E-bikes have become an increasingly popular transportation and recreation option, but without regulations, questions remain about where and how riders are allowed to use them.
