4/14/2023 MEDIA ADVISORY: Rep. Morales, Sanchez to celebrate dedication of Cesar Chavez Memorial Way in Providence

STATE HOUSE – Rep. David Morales (D-Dist. 7, Providence) and Rep. Enrique Sanchez (D-Dist. 9, Providence) will be joined on Saturday by community advocates and city leaders in celebrating the dedication of Cesar Chavez Memorial Way in Providence.

The celebration will take place Saturday, April 15 at 2 p.m. at Davis Park, 50 Raymond St, in Providence.

Cesar Chavez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist. Along with Dolores Huerta, he co-founded the National Farm Workers Association which later became the United Farm Workers union. He is celebrated as a hero throughout the country, especially in the Mexican-American community. California and Texas celebrate his birthday, March 31, as a state holiday. President Obama declared the day “Cesar Chavez Day,” and many municipalities around the country have monuments celebrating his legacy.

The dedication of Raymond Street in Providence as Cesar Chavez Memorial Way follows years of community advocacy. The city passed a resolution on April 6, making the dedication possible.
