2/1/2023 Rep. Alzate to lead House Special Legislation Committee
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket) has been named chairwoman of the House Committee on Special Legislation by Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick).

The Committee on Special Legislation was created by the House of Representatives in 2019. It handles legislation pertaining to commissions, resolutions and issues that do not fall within the purview of other standing committees.

“Sometimes a piece of legislation does not fit within the parameters of the other committees yet this does not mean that these bills are any less important and impactful.  The Special Legislation Committee serves to give these pieces of legislation the due attention that they deserve and I thank Speaker Shekarchi and my colleagues in the House for believing in my ability to lead this committee and serve the people of Rhode Island,” said Representative Alzate.

In addition to her position as chairwoman, Representative Alzate will serve as the Second Vice Chair of the Labor Committee.  She was also appointed to serve on the Finance and Municipal Government and Housing Committees.

First elected to the House of Representatives in November 2018, Representative Alzate previously served as the Chairwoman of the Rhode Island Legislative Black and Latino Caucus from 2021 to 2022.
