Rep. O’Brien cosponsors bill to lower sales tax
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. William W. O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence) has cosponsored legislation (2023-H 5192) which would lower the state’s sales tax to six percent.
The bill was introduced by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon, Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick). Governor McKee included a sales tax reduction in his FY 2024 budget proposal, lowering the rate to 6.85 percent. Currently, the state has a sales tax rate of seven percent.
“While I applaud Governor McKee for lowering the sales tax in his budget proposal, I believe that the governor’s plan does not do enough for the residents of Rhode Island who are seriously struggling in this current inflationary environment. Representative Solomon’s legislation would bring immediate and real financial relief to Rhode Islanders at a time when they most need it. This bill would bring our state’s sales tax in line with our regional neighbors, as opposed to having the highest current rate in New England, leaving no reason for our residents to continue traveling across state lines for major purchases in hopes of saving money on a lower sales tax,” said Representative O’Brien.
The legislation has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
