1/13/2023 Goodwin honored for legislative work against cancer
STATE HOUSE – Brown University’s Legoretta Cancer Center has honored Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin for her legislative contributions to cancer prevention and treatment.

Senator Goodwin (D-Dist. 1, Providence) received the organization’s Public Service Award for her advocacy for and successful passing of legislation addressing the prevention and early treatment of cancer.

“I am very grateful for this recognition, and even more thankful to the Legoretta Cancer Center at Brown University for its amazing work in advancing cancer research, treatment and policy. I am always proud to partner with them any time I can, because we all want Rhode Islanders to have access to the very best prevention, detection and care when it comes to cancer,” said Senator Goodwin (D-Dist. 1, Providence).

Senator Goodwin has been a longstanding advocate for cancer patients, dating back long before her own ongoing treatment for cancer. She has championed many bills to advance prevention and access to treatment, including a 2018 law (2018-S 2299B) that prohibits minors from using tanning beds, a 2017 law (2017-S 0821A) requiring insurance  to cover fertility preservation services for patients undergoing medical treatments that could cause infertility,  a law enacted in 2021 (2021-S 0383A) to cover preventative colorectal cancer screenings, and a bill enacted last year (2022-S 2201A) requiring private health insurers to cover biomarker testing, which identifies biological changes or abnormalities that may be associated with cancer.
