1/5/2023 Ruggerio elected to new term as Senate President
STATE HOUSE – After convening the 2023-2024 session and being sworn into office, the members of the Rhode Island Senate on Tuesday, Jan. 3, elected Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) for a new term as Senate President.
 
“I want to thank my colleagues for entrusting me to continue leading the Senate for another two years. Serving as Senate President is an incredible honor and a responsibility I take seriously. I pledge to continue working collaboratively with every member of the Senate to accomplish our goals, serve our constituents, build consensus, and move Rhode Island forward.”
 
President Ruggerio resides in North Providence and represents District 4, which includes portions of North Providence and Providence. He is the father of two grown children and grandfather to three granddaughters.
 
President Ruggerio, the Dean of the Senate and longest serving member of the General Assembly, has served as Senate President since 2017. He previously served as Majority Leader from 2011 to 2017, and as Senate Majority Whip from 2003 to 2010. He also previously served as Deputy President Pro Tempore of the Senate and as Chairman of the Senate Finance Committee’s Subcommittee on Labor and Transportation. He served in the House of Representatives from 1981 through 1984, when he was elected to the Senate.
