12/8/2022 Legislators win $41,000 for local charities in at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort Blackjack Tournament
Members of the General Assembly won a total of $41,000 for Rhode Island charities at the ninth annual Holiday Charity Blackjack Tournament for Charity at Bally’s Twin River Lincoln Casino Resort yesterday.

The Senate pulled out ahead this year, with Sen. Frank Lombardi (D-Dist. 26, Cranston) winning first place and receiving $10,000 for Rhode Island Community Food Bank. Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) came in second, winning $7,500 for St. Edward Food & Wellness Center. Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin (D-Dist. 1, Providence) came in third, earning $5,000 for Mary House Food Pantry & Shelter.

Rep. William W. O'Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence) came in fourth, bringing $3,500 for Veterans of Foreign Wars. Rep. Jacquelyn Baginski came in fifth and received $2,500 for CALI Fund at the Cranston Police Department.

All other participating legislators took home $1,000 for the charities of their choice. They included House Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick) for Go Fetch Rescue, House Majority Leader Christopher R. Blazejewski (D-Dist. 2, Providence) for Meals on Wheels RI, outgoing Senate Majority Leader Michael J. McCaffrey (D-Dist. 29, Warwick) for Academic Decathlon, incoming Senate Majority Leader Ryan W. Pearson (D-Dist. 19, Cumberland, Lincoln) for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Cumberland-Lincoln, Rep. Marvin L. Abney (D-Dist. 73, Newport, Middletown) for the Community Housing Resource Board/Housing Hotline, Sen. Walter S. Felag Jr. (D-Dist. 10, Warren, Bristol, Tiverton) for East Bay Food Pantry, Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence) for Genesis Center, Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) for Inspiring Minds, Rep. Brandon Potter (D-Dist. 16, Cranston) for Project Weber/Renew, Sen. Roger A. Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland) for the Milk Fund and Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton, Portsmouth) for the Tiverton Senior Center.

A total of $60,000 was donated by Bally’s through the tournament. Thirty-six players participated on behalf of their selected Rhode Island charity. To date, approximately $540,000 has been given to local charities from this annual festive holiday event.
