6/28/2022 Rep. Azzinaro praises funding inclusion for mobile DMV unit in state budget
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Samuel A. Azzinaro (D-Dist. 37, Westerly) is praising the inclusion of funding for a mobile Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) unit within the FY 2023 state budget to serve the town of Westerly.

“When I was first elected in 2008, the governor removed the DMV out of Westerly.  In 2010, we were able to override the governor’s veto to require the DMV to maintain an office in Westerly at least one day a week and the DMV opened an office in the Westerly Town Hall.  Due to the pandemic, it was closed in 2020,” said Representative Azzinaro, Chairman of the House Veterans’ Affairs Committee.

“Since then, I have fought tirelessly to rectify this problem and I am happy to report that once again, Westerly residents will have close and convenient access to a DMV location with the funding for a mobile unit included in the state budget.  I have to thank Speaker Shekarchi, Speaker Pro Tempore Brian Patrick Kennedy and Senate Minority Leader Dennis Algiere for their support and advocacy in getting this funding approved in the budget.  The DMV mobile unit will not only benefit the residents in Westerly and Warren, but also the entire state when the DMV mobile unit travels to where it’s needed within Rhode Island,” concluded Chairman Azzinaro.

The General Assembly appropriated $750,000 from general revenues for one mobile DMV unit to be used to operate in place of registry locations required by law one day per week in Westerly and three times a week in Warren, both of which closed during the pandemic.
