5/31/2022 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Thursday to vote on one bill and hear legislation
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Thursday, June 2 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to vote on legislation (2022-H 7807) sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett) which would establish criminal penalties for a wanton or reckless act or omission of a parent, guardian or any other person who has custody or control of a child that results in a substantial risk of serious bodily injury or sexual abuse of a child in their care.

The committee will also hear testimony on the following bills:
  • 2022-S 2228, sponsored by Sen. Cynthia A. Coyne (D-Dist. 32, Barrington, Bristol, East Providence), changes the definition of “elder person” for purposes of exploitation of elders from a person 65 years of age or older to a person 60 years of age or older.
  • 2022-S 2425A, sponsored by Sen. Roger A. Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland), creates a new crime, referred to as stolen valor, which would be committed by any person who knowingly, with the intent to obtain money or property, fraudulently represents himself or herself as an active or inactive member of the military or armed forces.
  • 2022-S 2776, sponsored by Sen. Franks S. Lombardi (D-Dist. 26, Cranston), corrects the erroneous misdemeanor classification of the criminal offense of fraudulent conversion by agent or factor.
The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, on i3Broadband on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.  The meeting will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
