STATE HOUSE – General Treasurer Seth Magaziner and Rep. Thomas Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) announced today that they helped reunite Coventry residents with nearly $70,000 through the Office of the General Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property Division.
Representative Noret reached out to the General Treasurer’s Office to bring this event to Coventry along with the town’s Director of Human Services, Bob Robillard.
“At a time when the cost of living is rising and Rhode Island families are struggling to keep up, it is more important than ever to check if you have money waiting to be returned to you,” said General Treasurer Seth Magaziner.
During a visit to the Coventry Senior Center at 50 Wood Street on Tuesday, May 17, several local residents, several local youth recreation leagues, the Central Coventry Fire District, and the Town of Coventry were found to have $68.730.35 of unclaimed property. The Office of the General Treasurer is now working with those individuals and organizations to ensure that they are reunited with their money in a timely manner.
“I really wanted to make the people of Coventry aware of this database,” said Representative Noret, who plans on hosting a similar event in West Warwick in June. “Anybody can go online and do this, but not everybody knows to. I am extremely gratified with the outcome of the event. I pride myself on the work I do for my community, and this was a great way to help constituents navigate their way through state government in a way that could benefit them.”
In 2021, the Treasurer’s Office returned more than $13.7 million to over 21,000 people, cities and towns, local businesses and nonprofits and the program has returned more than $86 million in unclaimed property to over 100,000 entities since 2015.
Unclaimed property may include utility deposits, inheritances, stocks and bonds, bank accounts, uncashed payroll checks, life insurance policies, traveler's checks, contents from deposit boxes, and other property.
Searching for and claiming unclaimed property is free and easy to do. The Unclaimed Property website is available for anyone to search for Rhode Island unclaimed property securely and safely, file a claim, or check the status of a claim for free at findrimoney.com.
