Rep. Williams congratulates Colonel Darnell Weaver as the first African American head of the State Police
|
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Anastasia P. Williams (D-Dist. 9, Providence) is issuing the following statement to congratulate Rhode Island’s newest State Police superintendent, Colonel Darnell Weaver.
“Today is a historic day. For the first time in its 97 year existence, the Rhode Island State Police will be led by a person of color, Colonel Darnell Weaver. Colonel Weaver is a shining example of integrity, character and morality while his dedication to helping and protecting the people of Rhode Island is second to none. Simply put, in the most prestigious law enforcement organization in our state, Colonel Weaver is the best of the best and his new role within the organization he has served with distinction and honor for 28 years is not only well-deserved, but also serves as a monumental change in furthering our state’s path toward a true society of diversity, equality and inclusion for all Rhode Islanders.
“With that being said, I was a little surprised with the low-key nature of this historic celebration. In particular, I was taken aback by the small number of municipal police chiefs in attendance and it seemed that an opportunity was missed to truly celebrate Colonel Weaver’s character, accomplishments and the historic significance of this moment for Rhode Island’s community of color and the state as a whole.
“I extend my most sincere congratulations to Colonel Weaver as our state’s first State Police Colonel of Color and I look forward to witnessing his leadership, integrity and commitment to equality and justice as he leads the Rhode Island State Police into a brighter and more united future,” concluded Representative Williams.
