Rep. Noret to participate in ‘Emerging Leaders Program’ at University of Virginia
|
STATE HOUSE –— Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) has been selected to participate in the 2022 Emerging Leaders Program sponsored by the State Legislative Leaders Foundation (SLLF) at the University of Virginia’s Darden School of Business in July. Representative Noret was nominated by Speaker of the House K. Joseph Shekarchi (D-Dist. 23, Warwick).
“I look forward to this opportunity to gather with my peers from other state legislatures to tackle the problems that all our states face,” said Representative Noret. “I can’t wait to discuss these ideas with other lawmakers from diverse backgrounds, and bring those ideas back to Rhode Island. When you get a fresh perspective on the issues, you can find more innovative ways to address them. I am honored to have been nominated by the speaker, and I’m proud to represent my state and community.”
The Emerging Leaders Program is designed specifically for the next generation of leaders in state legislatures who are serving in ether their first or second term. The program is held every July on the campus of the University of Virginia, in partnership with the distinguished Darden School of Business.
Up to 50 state legislators from across the nation take part in four days of challenging classroom discussions, led by a team of professors at the Darden School. Since 2005, over 600 legislators have participated in the program.
To identify the candidates, SLLF relies on the recommendation of the leadership in each state legislature. SLLF received more than 200 nominations for 50 seats at Darden. Nominees are asked to complete a detailed questionnaire designed to give the selection committee a clearer sense of their dedication to public service, and what contributions they could make to the program.
Several months in advance, participants are sent a packet of books and essays that form the basis for discussions in the classroom. Participants are exposed to Jefferson-inspired teaching methods, which involve case studies, problem-solving exercises, and small group discussions.
