State Representatives Fellela, Cardillo, Costantino applaud passage of school building referendum
|
STATE HOUSE — The Johnston House delegation, including Representatives Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43), Edward T. Cardillo Jr. (D-Dist. 42) and Gregory J. Costantino (D-Dist. 44), are thanking town voters for approving a bond referendum to fund the building and repairing of the community’s public schools.
Johnston voters on Tuesday overwhelmingly approved the issuance of up to $210 million in general obligation bonds for the project, which calls for moving all elementary students into a new school and constructing an early childhood center. It would also renovate the Nicholas A. Ferri Middle School and Johnston Senior High School.
“This is an important step forward for the town,” said Representative Fellela, who sponsored the legislation (2022-H 7028) that authorized the town to issue the bonds. “It has been well documented that students can be seriously hampered by the limitations of poor school facilities. I thank the people of Johnston for coming out and showing such overwhelming support for this referendum.”
“The elementary schools in particular are in dire need of replacing,” said Representative Cardillo. “One of them was built in the 1920s and all four of them have outlived their usefulness. This is fantastic news for the students and parents of Johnston.”
“These new facilities will be a boon to the town,” said Representative Costantino, who cosponsored the legislation. “With Tuesday’s approval, construction on the elementary school could begin as early as this summer. And with the early childhood center accommodating over 350 kindergarten and pre-K students, Johnston will be at the forefront of early learning innovation.”
