1/28/2022 Media Advisory: Tax exempt properties commission to meet Monday
STATE HOUSE – The Special Legislative Commission to Analyze and Make Recommendations Regarding Tax Exempt Properties in the State of Rhode Island will meet virtually Monday.

The meeting is scheduled Monday, Jan. 31, from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. via WebEx. It will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15, and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. It will also be live streamed at https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.

On the agenda us a presentation by commission member Edinaldo Tebaldi, a faculty fellow, executive director of institutional effectiveness and strategy and professor of economics at Bryant University. No public comment will be taken at this meeting.

Created by legislation (2021-S 1004) sponsored last year by Senate President Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence), the commission is to comprehensively study the identification and treatment of tax exempt properties in Rhode Island, including, but not limited to, a review of Rhode Island General Laws and municipal ordinances governing exemptions and payment-in-lieu-of-taxes (PILOT) programs in Rhode Island and other states and to provide recommendations to ensure the treatment of property owned by tax exempt entities is transparent, consistent, equitable and of benefit to all Rhode Islanders.

Senate Majority Whip Maryellen Goodwin (D-Dist. 1, Providence) serves as the commission’s chairwoman. The commission also includes Sen. Frank A. Ciccone III (D-Dist. 7, Providence, North Providence); Sen. Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield); Sen. Thomas J. Paolino (R-Dist. 17, Lincoln, North Providence, North Smithfield); Lifespan Vice President of Government Relations David Balasco; Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Rhode Island President Daniel Egan; North Providence Town Councilman Steven Loporchio; Providence City Council President John Igliozzi;  GrowSmart RI Executive Director Scott Wolf; Rhode Island Public Expenditure Council Manager of Research Justine Oliva; and Tebaldi.
