Media Advisory: House Environment Committee to hear bills on food packaging, banning the sale of ‘nips’
|
STATE HOUSE – The House Environment and Natural Resources Committee will meet Thursday for hearings on bills, including several aimed at reducing food packaging waste.
The committee is scheduled to meet Thursday, Jan. 27, at the rise of the House session (about 4:30 p.m.) in Room 101 on the first floor of the State House.
Among the bills on the agenda are:

2022-H 7063 — Sponsored by Environment and Natural Resources Committee Chairman David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston), this bill would prohibit food service establishments from using disposable polystyrene foam containers and plastic stirrers.

2022-H 7064 — Also sponsored by Chairman Bennett, this bill would ban the sale of miniature alcoholic beverage containers, often referred to as “nips.”

2022-H 7065 — This bill sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett), titled the “Plastic Waste Reduction Act,” would prohibit single-use plastic checkout bags statewide.

2022-H 7067 — Sponsored by Rep. Joseph J. Solomon Jr. (D-Dist. 22, Warwick), this bill would require the Department of Environmental Management to establish baseline shellfish harvest targets and a timeline to accomplish the restoration targets of quahog, oyster and bay scallop populations.
The meeting will be televised on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15, and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers, and live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
Individuals may testify in person or over the phone. For phone testimony, the deadline to register is Wednesday at 4 p.m. at this link. The commission is unable to designate a specific time that registrants will be called and in some cases, it may be at a late hour. Witnesses are urged to submit written testimony in the event they unavailable when called.
Those who wish to testify in person must also register, either using the form at the same link, or by signing up in person with the clerk at the meeting. Masks are mandatory in committee hearings and in the State House.
