12/3/2021 Media Advisory: Redistricting Commission to continue meetings around state; first one Monday in Smithfield
STATE HOUSE — The Special Commission on Reapportionment will once again convene a series of hearings around the state. The new round of meetings will focus on the initial plans for the layout of the House and Senate districts for the purpose of garnering public input.

The first of these meetings is scheduled for Monday, Dec. 6 at 6 p.m. in the auditorium of Smithfield High School, 90 Pleasant View Ave. in Smithfield. Masks are required inside the building.

The agenda includes a presentation from Kimball Brace of Election Data Services Inc., which will consist of an update and discussion on the reallocation of prisoners, an explanation of the drawing process, the presentation of initial alternative plans of House and Senate districts, and an explanation of the remaining timeline of the reapportionment process. Public comment will then be accepted.

The state constitution calls for the General Assembly to reapportion its districts as well as the two congressional districts after each 10-year federal census. The commission is co-chaired by Sen. Stephen R. Archambault (D-Dist. 22, Smithfield, North Providence, Johnston) and Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland).

The meeting will air live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15 and 61, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers. The meetings will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx
