7/13/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: Colombian American legislators to host 211th Colombian Independence Day celebration at the State House on July 19
STATE HOUSE – Five Rhode Island legislators of Colombian descent will be hosting the 211th Colombian Independence Day celebration on July 19 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the State Room of the State House.  Rep. Karen Alzate (D-Dist. 60, Pawtucket), Sen. Sandra Cano (D-Dist. 8, Pawtucket), Rep. Carlos E. Tobon (D-Dist. 58, Pawtucket), Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) and Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket) will host the celebration.

“Every year, Colombian American elected officials celebrate the independence of Colombia and this year it has been 211 years since our homeland gained its freedom. This celebration is a way to celebrate our culture, to show Rhode Island our rich history of coming to this country and to continue celebrating our heritage. There are currently five of us in the General Assembly and many more in local elected offices.  We are honoring people from the community who have made contributions to the state and who are proud Colombian Americans,” said the legislators.

Along with musical performances and discussing what Colombian Americans have brought to Rhode Island, the event will honor the following individuals:
  • Dr. Alvaro Olivares will receive The Legacy Award, which is presented to a person who has made a lasting impact to the community through their work, dedication, and commitment. Their contributions will be honored for generations to come in the Colombian community.
  • Juan Pablo Barrera and Nina Gutierrez will each receive The Cultural Preservation Award, which is presented to individuals that have fulfilled their civic duty through engaging others, whether it's through education, community or involvement in advancing the culture forward.
  • Michelle Arias and the Tamayo Family will each receive The Leadership in Civics Award, which is presented to individuals that have fulfilled their civic duty through engaging others, whether it's through education, community or involvement in advancing the culture forward.
The celebration is open to the public and will be able to be viewed on Capitol Television here: https://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
