House passes Rep. Biah’s bill which allows students unable to complete the FAFSA the ability to participate in the RI Promise Scholarship

 STATE HOUSE – The House of Representatives tonight passed legislation sponsored by Rep. Nathan W. Biah (D-Dist. 3, Providence) which will allow students unable to legally complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to participate in the RI Promise Scholarship program.
The FAFSA has certain ineligibility standards such as undocumented status or prior criminal convictions that prevent students from using the program.
“If a student has the initiative to continue their education past high school, we should be supportive of their efforts to better themselves and their communities. The RI Promise program has opened up numerous doors for our students who want to achieve a degree but do not have the financial means to do so and I feel that it is only fair to make this scholarship accessible to all of our students who wish to take the next step in their education,” said Representative Biah.
The legislation (2021-H 5826) would allow students who are legally unable to complete the FAFSA to complete a comparable form created by the Community College of Rhode Island to receive funding under the Rhode Island Promise Scholarship.
The bill now heads to the Senate for consideration where Sen. Frank A. Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, North Providence) has introduced the legislation (2021-S 0993).
