6/28/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets today to consider several firearms bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting today, Monday, June 28 at the RISE of the House (approximately 4 p.m.) in Room 35 of the State House to consider several bills relating to firearms.

Among the bills being considered are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2021-H 5386, sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren), prohibits obtaining/purchasing/transferring a firearm on behalf of another person if other person is prohibited from possessing a firearm with an increase in penalties for those offenses.
  • 2021-H 5553A, sponsored by Rep. Justine A. Caldwell (D-Dist. 30, East Greenwich, West Greenwich), would create a tax credit for the purchase of a qualified gun safe, not to exceed $1,000. It would also exempt gun safes from the sales tax.
  • 2021-H 5555A, sponsored by Majority Whip Katherine S. Kazarian (D-Dist. 63, East Providence), prohibits the possession of firearms on school grounds except for peace officers, retired law enforcement officers, persons under contract to provide school security services, and unloaded firearms in locked containers or a locked rack on motor vehicles.
  • 2021-H 5727A, sponsored by Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket), requires the Office of the Attorney General to issue a report containing the total cases charged with a firearm in all Rhode Island courts and a list of cases charged with a firearm which have been disposed during the calendar year.
On Tuesday, June 29 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House, the committee will consider legislation (2021-H 5580) sponsored by Rep. Charlene M. Lima (D-Dist. 14, Cranston, Providence) which creates a custody procedure for pets in divorce and separation proceedings based on the best interests of the animal. This act would not apply to assistance/service animals.

The committee will also hear testimony on a bill (2021-H 6464) sponsored by Rep. Teresa A. Tanzi (D-Dist. 34, Narragansett, South Kingstown) which provides for the sealing and unsealing of court files in residential eviction proceedings and provides that any eviction for nonpayment of rent, in which the rent arrearage is paid through a rent relief program, shall remain sealed permanently.

The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
