STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on tomorrow, Friday, June 25 at the 12 p.m. in Room 35 of the State House to consider several bills.

Among the bills being considered are the following pieces of legislation:
  • 2021-H 5468A, sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), would, upon its own motion or upon request of a parolee, enable the parole board to terminate a parolee's supervision and legal custody order. Prisoners with a life sentence for first and second degree murder are excluded.
  • 2021-H 6084A, sponsored by Rep. Deborah A. Fellela (D-Dist. 43, Johnston), provides for minimum qualifications for court constable to include education, military, or law enforcement experience and drug and psychological screening.
  • 2021-H 6147A, sponsored by Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket), amends the Hate Crimes Sentencing Act. The bill adds gender identity and expression to protected groups. It also clarifies sentencing enhancements for hate crimes against victims in a protected group and permits sentencing to community service or educational classes.
The committee will also hear testimony on legislation (2021-H 6454) sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket) which requires that penalties or restitution payments for larceny of a campaign account or campaign expenditure reporting violations be deposited into the Rhode Island crime victim compensation program fund and not into the candidate's campaign account.

The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
