4/12/2021 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Tuesday to vote on a bill relating to disabled parents and to hear testimony
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Tuesday, April 13 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to consider legislation (2021-H 5394) sponsored by Rep. Terri Cortvriend (D-Dist. 72, Portsmouth, Middletown) which precludes a parent's disability from serving as the sole basis for the state to institute an investigation of the disabled parent's family.

The committee will also hear testimony on the following bills:
  • 2021-H 6171, sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence), prohibits physical sex characteristics surgery for children under 12 years of age, except to address an immediate risk of physical harm. Provides for a private course of action for violations with a 10 year statute of limitations.
  • 2021-H 6153, sponsored by Rep. Anastasia P. Williams (D-Dist. 9, Providence), amends the Law Enforcement Officers' Bill of Rights to provide greater accountability in the disciplinary process over law enforcement officers.
  • 2021-H 5993, sponsored by Rep. Jose F. Batista (D-Dist. 12, Providence), provides police reform by requiring body cameras and makes certain methods of restraint a felony such as chokeholds and using the foot as a weapon.
  • 2021-H 5995, sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), codifies the factors that a court must consider in imposing a sentence on a criminal defendant.
The State House remains closed to the public as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, in high definition on Cox Channel 1061, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
