2/27/2018 Rep. Perez introduces bill regarding voter initiative and referendum
STATE HOUSE – Rep. Ramon A. Perez (D-Dist. 13, Providence, Johnston) has introduced legislation (2018-H 7592) that would ask voters whether they wish to amend the state constitution to allow voter initiative, a process by which voters could propose new laws, amend existing laws, or repeal unpopular laws by referendum if they collect enough petition signatures.

“The initiative would empower the voters to engage with their government in the most direct way possible. If they believe their voices are not being heard by their elected officials, this legislation would give Rhode Island’s voters the power to rectify their grievances in an open, transparent and democratic way,” said Representative Perez.

Currently, all lawmaking power in Rhode Island is vested in the General Assembly, and if citizens want a particular law passed, they must lobby members of the Assembly.

If voter initiative is established, voters who collect enough signatures of support could get their legislative proposals on the ballot, and see them become law if voters support them.
