2/15/2018 Rep. McLaughlin announces RIDOT plans to repair, resurface 35.8 miles of roads in Cumberland
STATE HOUSE — After numerous meetings with officials from the state Department of Transportation and the town of Cumberland, Rep. James N. McLaughlin (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls) has announced that he was able to arrange a memorandum of understanding that will result in coordinated efforts to repair and repave 35.8 miles of roads in Cumberland.

“The DOT will undertake an asphalt overlay after replacing a portion of drains and sewer manhole covers, saving Cumberland taxpayers close to $1 million,” said Representative McLaughlin. “With some major road resurfacing projects scheduled, I wanted to make sure that all infrastructure issues, including the replacement of sewers and water mains were coordinated so it could all be done at once.”

Representative McLaughlin, concerned about the state of deterioration in pipes that have not been replaced since 1954, had written a letter to RIDOT Director Peter Alviti, requesting the meeting to coordinate all the road projects, so they could be done all at once.

The roads involved in the project include Diamond Hill Road, Broad Street, Nate Whipple Highway, High Street and Manville Hill Road.

“All the drain work and utility work will be buried before the state does the overlay,” said Representative McLaughlin. “Ultimately, every city and town should be doing that. I want Cumberland to serve as a model town for the state in the way road projects should be coordinated.”
