Media Advisory: Event scheduled tomorrow to kick off ‘Fight for $15’ and fair pay
|
STATE HOUSE – Legislators will be joined by workers and advocacy groups at an event tomorrow to launch the coordinated campaign to raise the state’s minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023 and to guarantee fair pay. A broad coalition will be supporting both of these bills that aim to reduce poverty and close the wage gap.
The event is scheduled tomorrow, Tuesday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m. in the State Library on the second floor of the State House.
Sen. Jeanine Calkin (D-Dist. 30, Warwick), Sen. Gayle Goldin (D-Dist. 3, Providence), Rep. Marcia Ranglin-Vassell (D-Dist. 5, Providence) and Rep. Susan R. Donovan (D-Dist. 69, Bristol, Portsmouth) will participate, along with workers who would benefit from the legislation.
The minimum wage bill, sponsored by Senator Calkin and Representative Ranglin-Vassell, would gradually increase the minimum wage to $15 an hour by 2023 and then index the minimum wage to rise with inflation.
The fair pay bill, sponsored by Senator Goldin and Representative Donovan, would remove hiring practices that depress wages for women and people of color.
