Rep. Messier commission to build Gulf War Memorial will make report to General Assembly next year
|
 STATE HOUSE — A House commission created this year at the urging of Rep. Mary Duffy Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) will study the feasibility of constructing a memorial to veterans of the Gulf Wars.
The House of Representatives voted this week (2017-H 6340) to give the commission a deadline of June 30, 2018.
“Honoring our war veterans has always been important to Rhode Island,” said Representative Messier. “As you walk through the State House, you can see memorials or statues and paintings honoring the veterans of every war Rhode Islanders fought in starting with the Revolutionary War. The time has come to honor those who served in the Gulf Wars. Almost 300 Americans lost their lives in the first Gulf War. Almost 4,500 died in the second.”
The seven-member commission, which will be appointed by the Speaker of the House, will consist of four state representatives, the director of Veterans’ Affairs, the adjutant general of the Rhode Island National Guard and a Gulf War veteran.
