4/4/2017 Eco-Depot Event Scheduled for Coventry
Residents of Coventry Invited to Properly Dispose of Hazardous Waste

STATE HOUSE  --  Representative Sherry Roberts (R-District 29 Coventry, West Greenwich) is reminding Coventry residents that the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation is holding an Eco-Depot event on Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Coventry Town Hall Anex located at 1675 Flat River Road in Coventry, RI.

In an effort to promote safe disposal of household hazardous waste, the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation (RIRRC) will co-host the Eco-Depot collection event with the town of Coventry.  Residents can bring household hazardous waste (HHW) and electronic waste to the event.  The collection is available FREE of charge.
“I hope all Coventry residents will take advantage of this great opportunity to keep their homes and families are safe, as well as protecting the environment, including pets and wildlife, by safely disposing of toxic chemicals and hazardous waste,” said Representative Roberts.  “This is a great way to get rid of products and materials they, otherwise, didn’t know what to do with.”
According to the Rhode Island Resource Recovery Corporation, the average household stores about 10 gallons of common hazardous waste.  If you see the words, "caution," "hazardous," "danger," "flammable," or "poison," you need to use extreme care when you're ready to dispose of them.
Household hazardous waste includes gasoline, oil based paints, fluorescent light bulbs and lamps, pool chemicals, propane tanks, lawn chemicals, fertilizers, weed killers, turpentine, bug spray, antifreeze, paint thinners, lighter fluid, disinfectant, drain clog dissolvers, driveway sealer, flea dips, sprays, collars, houseplant insecticides, mercury thermostats, metal polishes, mothballs, motor oil, nail polishes and removers, oven cleaner, household pest and rat poisons, rug and upholstery cleaners, shoe polish, and windshield wiper fluid.
In addition to household hazardous waste, residential electronic waste will also be accepted at the Coventry Eco-Depot collection. Only devices covered under Rhode Island’s electronic waste law will be collected at this event.  Covered products are computers (monitors, computer towers, laptops and tablets) and televisions. No other electronic items will be accepted during Saturday’s special collection.
Improperly discarded household hazardous waste can pollute our environment by poisoning the sewer and septic systems, drinking water, ground water, and the earth.  This waste also poses a threat to sanitation workers because the products can ignite or explode in the garbage trucks.
