Sen. Lombardo’s bill that extends life of the landfill passes Senate
|
 STATE HOUSE – Sen. Frank Lombardo III’s legislation (2016-S 3024) that declares a state policy goal of having 50 percent of solid waste at the state landfill be diverted through diversion, source reduction, re-use, recycling or composting by 2025 passed the Senate tonight. The legislation is part of the Senate’s Grow Green Jobs RI action plan.
“The life of the landfill is a statewide issue that always needs to be at the forefront of our minds. It has a finite capacity and we must do everything possible to extend the operation of the landfill into the future. We don’t want any more landfills popping up in Rhode Island out of necessity,” said Senator Lombardo (D-Dist. 25, Johnston). “This legislation will save our municipalities money by increasing recycling and reducing solid waste while also prolonging the life of our landfill for many more years to come.”
The cosponsors of the legislation are Senate Majority Leader Dominick J. Ruggerio (D-Dist. 4, North Providence, Providence) and Sen. V. Susan Sosnowski (D-Dist. 37, South Kingstown, New Shoreham).
The legislation now heads to the House of Representatives for consideration.
