3/6/2015 Rep. Messier wants feasibility study on future of McCoy Stadium
STATE HOUSE – Concerned about what will become of one of Rhode Island’s most treasured landmarks once the Pawtucket Red Sox leave for Providence, Rep. Mary Duffy Messier (D-Dist. 62, Pawtucket) has submitted a resolution calling for a feasibility study of McCoy Stadium, which lies in Representative Messier’s district.

“Now that we know the plans of the new owners of the PawSox, it’s time to be proactive and figure out just what we can do to keep this stadium and area financially viable,” said Representative Messier. “We shouldn’t wait until moves are made and deals finalized to find a new use for the stadium and see what options exist for its future use. This stadium is so important not only to Pawtucket, but to everyone in Rhode Island who considers it a state treasure.”

The resolution (2015 H-5775) calls for the Rhode Island Department of Administration’s Division of Statewide Planning and the Rhode Island Commerce Corporation to conduct the feasibility Study of McCoy Stadium and the adjacent municipal facilities with respect to their continued and future use as a recreational venue, an entertainment center, or as a site for potential commercial, industrial or technological services development.

In addition, the study would identify the need for any improvements to existing roads, streets and highways, and any upgrade of utilities. The agencies would have to report their findings back to the General Assembly by June 1.

The resolution is co-sponsored by fellow Pawtucket Representatives Raymond H. Johnston Jr. (D-Dist. 61), David A. Coughlin (D-Dist. 60), Jean Philippe Barros (D-Dist. 59,) and Carlos E. Tobon (D-Dist. 58). The resolution has been referred to the House Finance Committee.
