Rep. Jenni A. Furtado was elected in November 2024 to represent District 64 in East Providence and Pawtucket. She serves on the House Labor Committee, the House Municipal Government and Housing Committee, and the House State Government and Elections Committee.
The
daughter of first-generation Peruvian immigrants, Representative Furtado
became Rhode Island's first Peruvian-American elected official when she was
elected to the East Providence School Committee in 2020. She was reelected
in 2022 and served as committee chairwoman in her second term, overseeing
the completion of the new East Providence High School from her position on
the School Committee and as a member of the High School Building Committee.
Representative Furtado became the first member of her family to graduate
from college when she earned a bachelor's degree from St. John's University
in 2015. She graduated from Roger Williams University Law School in 2019 and
specializes in immigration and workers' compensation law.
Her
legislative priorities in her first session include increasing state aid for
education, creating more opportunities for first-time homebuyers, supporting
seniors struggling on fixed incomes from rising costs, and providing
additional aid for businesses affected by the Washington Bridge closure.
Representative Furtado resides in East Providence with her husband,
Marc.
