Daniel P. McKiernan (D) was first elected in November 2014 as the State Representative from District 7, Providence. He was named a Deputy Majority Leader in January 2019. He serves as the first vice-chairman of both the House Committee on Labor and the House Committee on Small Business. He is also a member of the House Committee on Judiciary, the House Committee on Oversight and the House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources.

In 2017, he introduced a law that allows unionized firefighters to enter into an agreement which continues all contractual provisions contained in an expiring contract until a successor agreement has been reached. He also successfully sponsored health care reform legislation that requires a health care entity or health plan to issue a decision regarding the credentialing of a health care provider within 45 calendar days in order to streamline the process.

In 2016, he introduced legislation that requires school departments to permit each school within their jurisdiction to maintain epinephrine in cartridge injections to administer on an emergency basis to students. He also sponsored legislation that empowers the health insurance commissioner to establish payor guidelines to develop and maintain a system allowing patients electronic access to their health claims.

He also cosponsored legislation that requires the Commission on Standards and Training to train and instruct police officers and trainees to identify complaints involving mental health/substance abuse emergencies and to develop law enforcement responses to such emergencies.

Born on October 12, 1966, Representative McKiernan is a self-employed attorney in Providence and a member of the Rhode Island Bar Association. He is a Providence Municipal Court Judge. Representative McKiernan is a lector at St. Pius X Church in Providence an officer of the Ireland 32 Society.

He graduated in 1984 from Bishop Hendricken High School, received a Bachelor’s degree in economics in 1988 from Boston College, and obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from the Boston College School of Law in 1991.

He and his wife, Christina (Lynch), have two children, Tom and Bridget.
