Brian C. Newberry (R) has represented District 48, covering all of North
Smithfield and part of Burrillville, since first being elected in November 2008.
He served as the House Minority Leader from May 2011 through November 2016, when
he chose not to seek re-election. Before that, he served as Minority Whip. He
serves on the House Labor Committee, the House Oversight Committee, the House
Rules Committee and the House State Government and Elections Committee.
An attorney specializing in commercial litigation and professional
malpractice defense, Rep. Newberry is a Partner in the law firm of Donovan Hatem
LLP. He earned his Juris Doctorate, Magna Cum Laude, from Temple University
School of Law, in 1996. He received his Bachelor of Arts degree at the
University of Pennsylvania in 1993 and earned his high school diploma at Choate
Rosemary Hall in 1989.
A Little League and Soccer Association Coach, and member of Central
Congregational Church, Rep. Newberry is the former Vice-Chairman of the North
Smithfield Republican Town Committee and was the former Chairman of the North
Smithfield Juvenile Hearing Board.
Born on December 10, 1971, he is married to Elizabeth and they have three
children, Diane, Liam and Aidan.
