5/7/2026 President Lawson thanks Speaker Shekarchi, congratulates Speaker Blazejewski, Leader Kazarian
STATE HOUSE, Providence – President of the Senate Valarie J. Lawson today issued the following statement on leadership changes in the House of Representatives:

I am deeply grateful to Speaker Shekarchi for his dedicated service to our state. Joe led the House of Representatives with fairness and integrity, always making it a priority to listen to every point of view. His steadfast leadership on housing issues is emblematic of the spirit of service with which he always conducted himself: he never shied away from the challenge of addressing difficult issues, but worked with courage and determination precisely because he understood just how important they were to the people of Rhode Island. Whether working on housing, balancing the budget, improving health care, or tackling any number of other issues facing our state, Joe has always been committed to doing everything he can to make Rhode Island a better place to live and work. On a personal note, it was a pleasure to have worked alongside him, and I will miss him both personally and professionally. I wish him the best.

I also want to extend my heartfelt congratulations to Chris Blazejewski on his election as Speaker, and to Katie Kazarian on her election as Majority Leader.

Speaker Blazejewski leads with compassion, insight and a deep understanding of both the challenges facing Rhode Islanders and the responsibility that comes with public service. He has earned the respect of his colleagues through his thoughtful approach, steady leadership, and commitment to bringing people together to move our state forward.

Leader Kazarian — a fellow East Providence Townie! — is also an exceptional leader. She is thoughtful, hardworking, and deeply committed to the people she serves. Throughout her time in public service, Katie has demonstrated an ability to build consensus, lead with empathy, and approach every issue with both determination and care. Leader Kazarian is my representative, and we have collaborated on many issues for the good of our shared constituents. I know she will serve the House and the people of Rhode Island extraordinarily well in this new role.

I wish Speaker Blazejewski and Leader Kazarian well, and I look forward to working with them.
