5/7/2026 Senate approves Acosta’s bill to establish Central Falls Stabilization Fund
STATE HOUSE – The Senate today approved legislation sponsored by Sen. Jonathon Acosta that would establish the Central Falls Stabilization Fund in anticipation of Central Falls regaining local control of its schools.

“Returning Central Falls schools to local control has been a long time coming and it is only possible due to the significant progress the city has made over the years.  However, the economic reality of Central Falls also makes it necessary to carefully plan and scaffold the city’s contribution towards the formula-based local share.  That’s exactly what the Central Falls Stabilization Fund will be used for, and in turn, it will help Central Falls continue to grow and thrive into the future,” said Senator Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket).

The legislation (2026-S 3214) would eliminate the Central Falls School District Board of Trustees, in effect bringing an end to the longest state takeover of a local school district in the history of the United States.

The bill also would establish the Davies and Met Stabilization Fund to ensure continued appropriate funding to support the two regional schools’ students.

The legislation now heads to the House for consideration, where Rep. Joshua J. Giraldo (D-Dist. 56, Central Falls) has introduced the bill (2026-H 8429).
