Statement from Speaker K. Joseph Shekarchi on the overwhelming ratification of a new four-year contract for Butler Hospital workers
|
“Relief is on the way for patients needing the critical and in some cases life-saving mental health care provided at Butler Hospital. It is great news for every Rhode Islander that the experienced frontline health care workers at Butler Hospital are going back to work.”
Speaker Shekarchi played an important role in bringing Care New England executive leadership and SEIU 1199 leaders back to the bargaining table after initial talks broke down between the parties. Many bargaining sessions and discussions between the parties were convened directly in the Speaker’s office at the State House and offsite locations over the past several weeks.
“Sometimes in tough negotiations an outside voice helps bring the parties together. Rhode Island’s health care system needs Butler Hospital to be fully operational. Under the agreement patients will again be able to access all the mental health care services offered at Butler, frontline workers will earn better compensation, the hospital will have more predictability, and there will be increased collaboration on workplace safety. Everyone wins moving forward!”
