30th consecutive year of celebrating Greek Independence Day at the State House

STATE HOUSE – The 202nd anniversary of Greek Independence Day will be celebrated next week on March 21 at the State House.

The recognition of Greece's Independence and the participation of Rhode Island's Greek American communities is held under the sponsorship of Sen. Leonidas P. Raptakis (D-Dist. 33, Coventry, East Greenwich, West Greenwich) in cooperation with the Greek Orthodox Churches of Rhode Island.

The Annunciation Greek Orthodox Church of Cranston, the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church of Pawtucket and St. Spyridon Greek Orthodox Church of Newport will participate in the celebration.

Symeon Tegos, Consul General of Greece to New England and Nicholas Larigakis, President and CEO of the American Hellenic Institute, will be joined by representatives of Rhode Island’s Greek Orthodox churches on their visit to the State House.  Meron Reuben, Consul General of Israel to New England, will also be attending.

The celebration will begin in the Senate chamber where Father Philip Zymaris of the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church will deliver the opening prayer for the Senate session.  A Senate resolution honoring the 202nd anniversary of Greek Independence Day sponsored by Senator Raptakis will be introduced and read into the Senate record.

Following the Senate session, at 5:15 p.m. in the Governor’s State Room, Senator Raptakis will be joined by the Greek dignitaries, the state’s General Officers, fellow legislators and members of Rhode Island’s Greek community to celebrate and recognize Greek Independence Day with readings, songs and a keynote speech to be delivered by Nicholas Larigakis.

Following the event at the State House, a reception will be held at the Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, located at 97 Walcott Street in Pawtucket.

Greek Independence Day is celebrated annually on March 25, commemorating the start of the War of Greek Independence in 1821.
