STATE HOUSE – The Senate Judiciary Committee has scheduled a vote today on legislation to allow driver’s privileges for undocumented immigrants, and a hearing on legislation establishing statewide procedures for the use of police body cameras, funding for which has been proposed in the state budget bill.

The meeting is to be held virtually today, Monday June 21, at 4 p.m. via WebEx. The meeting will be streamed live by Capitol Television at http://www.rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.

Among the bills scheduled for votes are:
  • 2021-S 0190A — Sponsored by Sen. Frank A. Ciccone III (D-Dist. 7, Providence, North Providence), this bill would allow the Division of Motor Vehicles to issue driving privilege cards and driving privilege permits to applicants unable to establish lawful presence in the United States. The driving privilege cards and driving privilege permits would not be valid for identification purposes.
  • 2021-S 0408A  Sponsored by Sen. Ana B. Quezada (D-Dist. 2, Providence), this bill would require all hotels to make a good faith effort to post human trafficking awareness signage and provide all employees with human trafficking awareness training.
  • 2021-H 6083A — Sponsored by Rep. Scott A. Slater (D-Dist. 10, Providence), this bill would amend the uniform Controlled Substances Act and reclassify simple possession of 10 grams or less of certain controlled substances as a misdemeanor punishable as a two year misdemeanor rather than a felony.
Among the bills scheduled for hearings and possible votes are:
  • 2021-S 0954 — Sponsored by Sen. Jonathon Acosta (D-Dist. 16, Central Falls, Pawtucket) and backed by Attorney General Peter F. Neronha, this bill creates a statewide police body camera program. The 2022 state budget bill (2021-H 6122A) includes funding for the program.
The State House remains closed to in-person testimony. Written testimony is encouraged and must be emailed to SenateJudiciary@rilegislature.gov by 2 p.m. today to be provided to the committee at the hearing and to be included in the meeting records.
