Rep. Corvese bill outlines punishment for fentanyl possession passes House Judiciary
|
 STATE HOUSE – Rep. Arthur J. Corvese’s (D-Dist. 55, North Providence) legislation (2017-H 5517A) that amends the state’s Uniform Controlled Substances Act to include penalties for fentanyl possession passed the House Committee on Judiciary. The legislation now heads to the full House of Representatives for consideration.
“Ask any police officer, firefighter, EMT, or emergency room doctor or nurse what the greatest danger they see on a daily basis and they will tell you fentanyl. Far more potent than heroin or any other opiate, fentanyl is killing our family members, friends, and neighbors at an alarming rate and something must be done to end this scourge of death,” said Representative Corvese.
This act would make it unlawful for any person to possess, manufacture, sell, or deliver from one ounce to one kilogram of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl and would provide for a punishment by a prison term of up to 50 years and fine of not more than $500,000. The act would also provide for a punishment of up to life in prison and a fine of no more than $1,000,000 for the possession, manufacture, sale, or delivery of more than one kilogram of a mixture or substance containing a detectable amount of fentanyl.
