6/10/2024 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets today and tomorrow for several votes
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will meet today, Monday, June 10 at 3:30 p.m. in the House Lounge to vote on several bills.
           
The following pieces of legislation are scheduled for a vote:
  • 2024-H 7103A, 2024-S 2709A, sponsored by Rep. Mary Ann Shallcross Smith (D-Dist. 46, Lincoln, Pawtucket) and Sen. Melissa A. Murray (D-Dist. 24, Woonsocket, North Smithfield), prohibits credit reporting, executions, attachments against a principal residence for judgments based on medical debt. Defines medical debt as an amount for the receipt of health care services, products, or devices.
  • 2024-H 7577A, 2024-S 2262B, sponsored by Rep. John G. Edwards (D-Dist. 70, Tiverton) and Sen. Dawn Euer (D-Dist. 13, Newport, Jamestown), precludes any individual from interfering with another's access to transgender health care services and reproductive health care services.
  • 2024-H 7647A, sponsored by Rep. Rebecca Kislak (D-Dist. 4, Providence), requires landlords to list all mandatory fees when advertising any residential property for rent as well as on the first page of any lease. It also prohibits a landlord from charging a convenience fee when the tenant pays rent.
On Tuesday, June 11 at the rise of the House (approximately 6:30 p.m.) in the House Lounge, the committee will consider the following bills:
  • 2024-H 7053, sponsored by Rep. Jason Knight (D-Dist. 67, Barrington, Warren), permits those persons with felony convictions to have up to six misdemeanor offenses expunged from their criminal record.
  • 2024-H 7099A, sponsored by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), amends the Comprehensive Community-Police Relationship Act of 2015 to require an annual study by an outside agency chosen by the department.
  • 2024-H 8342, 2024-S 2227, sponsored by Rep. Carol Hagan McEntee (D-Dist. 33, South Kingstown, Narragansett) and Sen. Matthew L. LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston), redefines misdemeanors for expungement purposes and make prior felonies, subsequently reclassified as misdemeanors, eligible for expungement pursuant to sections 12-1.3-2 and 12-1.3-3.
The committee will also hear testimony on legislation (2024-H 8349, 2024-S 2211) sponsored by Representative Knight and Sen. Frank S. Lombardi (D-Dist. 26, Cranston) that states only protective orders issued against adults are to be transmitted to the attorney general’s B.C.I. for inclusion in the R.O.N.C.O. system. Protective orders against juveniles would be accessible to law enforcement.
