Assembly approves Rep. Voas, Chairman LaMountain legislation that helps hit-and-run victims
|
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly today approved legislation sponsored by Rep. Brandon T. Voas and Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Matthew L. LaMountain that would help support hit-and-run victims.
“Although I wish it wasn’t the case, hit-and-run crimes occur and are in the news far too often these days. This bill will help victims of this selfish crime recover and let them focus on healing rather than worrying about the expense of their recovery,” said Representative Voas (D-Dist. 57, Cumberland, Central Falls).
“As a former prosecutor, hit-and-run crimes were always very frustrating cases to see, and the toll these crimes take on victims is immense. The Crime Victims Compensation Fund is a proven program that’s crucially assisted countless victims of violent crime in Rhode Island, and it is only right that hit-and-run victims be afforded the same assistance and support,” said Chairman LaMountain (D-Dist. 31, Warwick, Cranston).
The legislation (2026-H 7585, 2026-S 2824) would make hit-and-run victims suffering from serious bodily injury eligible to receive support from the Crime Victim Compensation Program (CVCP).
CVCP provides up to $25,000 in reimbursement to Rhode Islanders for expenses related to violent crime, including medical, dental, and counseling expenses; relocation expenses; funeral and related expenses; crime scene cleaning; loss of earnings; and other expenses.
The bills now head to the governor for consideration.
