6/10/2026 Assembly passes Marszalkowski, Vargas bill to protect tax filers
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly today passed legislation sponsored by Rep. Alex D. Marszalkowski and Sen. Lammis Vargas that would protect tax filers from fraudulent or illegal tax preparation services.

“Improperly or fraudulently filed taxes can come with severe consequences and penalties for unsuspecting tax filers.  This is an important consumer-protection bill that will protect tax filers from being taken advantage of or seriously harmed from nefarious tax preparers,” said Representative Marszalkowski (D-Dist. 52, Cumberland).

“Anyone who pays someone else to prepare their taxes deserves the peace of mind that this important job will be done correctly, and any tax preparers who maliciously abuse this trust deserve significant consequences for financially or criminally damaging their client,” said Senator Vargas (D-Dist. 28, Cranston, Providence).

The legislation (2026-H 7613A, 2026-S 2810A) would create penalties for tax preparers who purposefully mislead their clients or act as ghost preparers of tax returns.  It would also require the tax administrator to publish a list of tax preparers who have had their privileges to prepare returns revoked or suspended.

The bill now heads to the governor for consideration.
