Assembly approves Leader Ciccone and Rep. DeSimone’s legislation that allows for increase in veterans tax exemption for Providence
|
STATE HOUSE – The General Assembly today approved legislation (2025-S 0720, 2025-H 5307) sponsored by Senate Majority Leader Frank A. Ciccone III and Rep. Anthony J. DeSimone that would authorize the Providence City Council to increase the veterans tax exemption.
“Providence’s veterans have not seen a tax relief increase in decades and we all know that the cost of living has gone up considerably. This bill will give Providence the power to help our veterans stay in their homes and afford the rising costs of daily necessities. For all that our veterans have done for us, they deserve this needed tax relief that thanks them for their selfless service to our state and country,” said Leader Ciccone (D-Dist. 7, Providence, Johnston).
“The current veterans tax exemption in Providence hasn’t increased in 25 years and we all know that economic conditions for our veteran residents have changed significantly since that time. This bill will allow the Council to give Providence veterans the tax relief that they desperately need and deserve. It’s the least we can do to thank them for their dedicated service,” said Representative DeSimone (D-Dist. 5, Providence).
The legislation would authorize the Providence City Council to exempt from taxation a specified dollar amount of real and/or personal property for the following qualifying Providence residents:
-
Veterans of war
-
Unmarried spouses of veterans of war
-
Veterans or the unmarried widow or widower of veterans who are 100% totally disabled through service connected disability
-
Gold Star parents
-
Veterans who were prisoners of war
-
Using the exemption for specially adapted housing for veterans with paraplegia
The legislation now heads to the governor for consideration.
