Chairwoman DiMario named ‘Environmental Champion’ by Clean Water Action
|
 STATE HOUSE — Sen. Alana M. DiMario has been honored by Clean Water Action as a “Legislative Champion” for her work promoting green energy development and protecting Rhode Island’s water from toxic chemicals both a state senator and as chairwoman of the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee. The award was presented at the organization’s 22nd annual “Breakfast of Champions.”
“I am honored and humbled to receive this award from the hardworking team at Clean Water Action,” said Senator DiMario (D-Dist. 36, Narragansett, North Kingstown, New Shoreham). “Rhode Island is lucky to have passionate advocates and lawmakers who work hard preserving access to clean water, building a green electrical grid and fulfilling the promises we made in the Act on Climate. My role as chair of the Senate Environment and Agriculture Committee has been to support the efforts of all my fellow legislators to successfully pass the environmental protections we need to preserve Rhode Island for generations to come. I accept this award on behalf of all my colleagues who continue to push forward this vital work.”
Senator DiMario was the lead sponsor of solar siting reform legislation (2023-S 684A) that passed in 2023, a priority of the Climate Jobs Rhode Island coalition. She was also the previous lead sponsor of legislation (2022-S 2449) to ban toxic Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAS) from common items in Rhode Island and has continued to stay active on PFAS policy and legislation.
“Senator DiMario is one of the top leaders on environmental issues in the Senate,” said Jed Thorp, Rhode Island director for Clean Water Action. “Not only does she chair the environment committee, but she’s also done the hard work behind the scenes on important issues like the proper siting of solar development, protecting Narragansett Bay and eliminating PFAS chemicals from consumer products. Plus, she’s a joy to work with.”
Clean Water Action is a national organization founded in 1972 during the campaign for the Clean Water Act. In Rhode Island, the group works to build a clean water and clean energy future through outreach, education, organizing, advocacy and policy action at the state and national levels.
Clean Water Action’s annual “Breakfast of Champions” took place Friday, May 17, at the Edgewood Yacht Club in Cranston. Also awarded at the breakfast were Rep. David A. Bennett (D-Dist. 20, Warwick, Cranston), University of Rhode Island Clinical Professor of Environmental Communication Dr. Sunshine Menezes, President of the Friends of the Saugatucket Bill McCusker, The Childhood Lead Action Project, IBEW Local 99 Business Manager Joe Walsh and youth activist and leader Jaylyn McNeill.
