1/23/2019 Rep. Casey appointed chairman of new House Committee on Special Legislation
STATE HOUSE — Speaker of the House Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston) has appointed Rep. Stephen M. Casey (D-Dist. 50, Woonsocket) to serve as chairman of the newly created House Special Legislation Committee.

“I am humbled and honored that Speaker Mattiello has selected me for this position,” said Representative Casey. “I look forward to chairing this new committee, which will help to ease the burden of some existing committees and give special legislation the attention it deserves.”

The Committee on Special Legislation was created by the House of Representatives when it adopted the House rules for the new session. The committee will handle legislation pertaining to constitutional amendments, commissions, resolutions and issues that do not fall within the purview of other standing committees.

In addition, Representative Casey was appointed to serve on the House Labor, Corporations, and Veterans’ Affairs committees.

The House Labor Committee deliberates legislation relating to workers’ compensation and labor laws. The Committee on Corporations considers issues relating to financial institutions, business regulation, property and casualty insurance and consumer protection. The House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs handles all legislation impacting the lives of Rhode Island veterans and those currently in military service.

Representative Casey was first elected as a state representative in November 2012.
