1/23/2019 Rep. Hawkins receives committee assignments
STATE HOUSE — House Speaker Nicholas A. Mattiello (D-Dist. 15, Cranston) has appointed Rep. Bernard A. Hawkins (D-Dist. 53, Smithfield, Glocester) to serve on the House Municipal Government Committee, the House Corporations Committee, the House Environment and Natural Resources Committee, and the House Special Legislation Committee.  Representative Hawkins was also appointed as the second vice-chair of the Special Legislation Committee.

The House Committee on Municipal Government considers all matters affecting municipal governments and transportation.

The House Committee on Corporations considers issues relating to financial institutions, business regulation, property and casualty insurance and consumer protection.

The House Committee on Environment and Natural Resources hears all matters pertaining to environmental issues, such as conservation, pollution, renewable energy and the green economy.

The House Committee on Special Legislation handles legislation pertaining to constitutional amendments, commissions, resolutions and issues that do not fall within the purview of other standing committees.

Representative Hawkins is an employee of the Providence Water Supply.  He has previously served on the Smithfield Town Council from 2006 to 2008, and again from 2010 to 2016. He was the Smithfield Town Council President during the 2014 to 2016 term.  Representative Hawkins was first elected to the Rhode Island House of Representatives on November 4, 2018.
