DMV debuts new online option for commercial license document submissions

Launch of web service eliminates need for DMV visits to comply with federal medical certificate requirements

CRANSTON, R.I. – Rhode Island’s commercial driver’s license holders can now save themselves trips to the Division of Motor Vehicle headquarters when they have to submit their medical certifications by making use of the DMV’s new online service.

The new online option is the result of legislation introduced by Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51 Woonsocket, Cumberland) and Sen. Roger A. Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland) and passed by the General Assembly this year to streamline the commercial driver’s license process by allowing drivers to submit medical certificates electronically to the DMV.

“A commercial driver’s license — just like any other business regulation — should not be a difficult process or a harrowing experience,” said Rep. Robert D. Phillips (D-Dist. 51, Woonsocket, Cumberland). “Those who rely on these licenses for their businesses don’t have the time to get a certificate and wait at the DMV just so they can present it in person. This legislation is pro-business and will streamline the process by letting drivers do it online.”

“I’m pleased whenever we can remove a little red tape and give people an option to take care of their business with the state more easily. Letting drivers submit their medical certificates online is more efficient for them and for the state. With this new portal, drivers will be able to check off this task quickly without missing a day on the road,” said Sen. Roger A. Picard (D-Dist. 20, Woonsocket, Cumberland).

“We’re pleased to offer this time-saving service to the Rhode Islanders who hold commercial driver’s licenses,” said Walter R. “Bud” Craddock, administrator of the R.I. Division of Motor Vehicles. “This new online option is the latest way the Division of Motor Vehicles is streamlining services following the successful launch last year of our new computer system. We expect Rhode Island’s business community will make steady use of this handy new service.”

The free, easy-to-follow, service provides a sample medical certificate to help drivers find the information they need to provide the DMV and allows them to upload their documents. When the submission is processed, they will receive an email noting the transaction is complete or that a DMV employee will contact them for additional information.
