MEDIA ADVISORY: House Education Committee to consider bills on attendance, curriculum, charter schools
|
STATE HOUSE — The House Education Committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday to consider several bills related to attendance, curriculum and charter schools.
The committee is scheduled to meet Wednesday, May 16, at 3 p.m. in the House Lounge on the second floor of the State House.
The committee will vote on the following legislation:

(2022-H 7062) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Joseph M. McNamara (D-Dist. 19, Warwick, Cranston), would provide that in developing alternative-learning plans, consideration would be given to the difficulties and interruptions students experience because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

(2022-H 7117A) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Edith H. Ajello (D-Dist. 1, Providence), would require district and independent charter schools to use a random selection process to select eligible public school students who would be invited to attend the charter school and allows a parent to decline the invitation.

(2022-H 7118A) — this resolution, introduced by Rep. Julie Casimiro (D-Dist. 31, North Kingstown, Exeter), would create a 15-member commission to study, identify gaps, and provide plans to counter the impact of hybrid and virtual learning on achievement rates of children grades K-12th, and would report back by Jan. 31, 2023.

(2022-H 7167A) — this bill, introduced by Representative McNamara, would direct school districts experiencing high rates of student absenteeism to establish attendance review teams to address this absenteeism.

(2022-H 7272) — this bill, introduced by Rep. Barbara Ann Fenton-Fung (R-Dist. 15, Cranston), would require all public elementary and secondary schools in Rhode Island to provide at least one unit of instruction on Asian American History and culture.

(2022-H 7784) — this resolution, introduced by Representative McNamara, would create a 10-member joint commission to study and make recommendations for efficient and effective governance of pre-k through 16 public education system, and would report back to the Senate and House by March 1, 2023.
The House Committee on Education is chaired by Representative McNamara. The meeting will air on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox Channels 15 and 61, on Full Channel on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.
