5/9/2022 MEDIA ADVISORY: House Judiciary Committee meets on Thursday to vote on four bills
STATE HOUSE – The House Judiciary Committee will be meeting on Thursday, May 12 at the RISE of the House (approximately 5 p.m.) in the House Lounge of the State House to vote on the following bills:
  • 2022-H 7709A, sponsored by Rep. Evan P. Shanley (D-Dist. 24, Warwick), sunsets the provision which allows first-time violators to avoid the fine by presenting proof of acquisition of a hands-free device prior to the imposition of the fine effective September 1, 2022.
  • 2022-H 7713, sponsored by Rep. Leonela Felix (D-Dist. 61, Pawtucket), removes diversion programs from the list of criminal convictions subject to mandatory DNA collection.
  • 2022-H 7810, sponsored by Rep. Gregg Amore (D-Dist. 65, East Providence), extends the "lookback" period for third and subsequent offenses pursuant §31-27-2 ("driving under influence of liquor or drugs") and §31-27-2.1 ("refusal to submit to chemical test") from five to ten years.
  • 2022-H 8078A, sponsored by Rep. Grace Diaz (D-Dist. 11, Providence), allows the District Court to designate the date of the hearing in eviction matters filed under the Residential Landlord and Tenant Act.
The committee will also be reconsidering legislation (2022-H 7716A) sponsored by Rep. Thomas E. Noret (D-Dist. 25, Coventry, West Warwick) which clarifies that the use of a wireless communication device for the purpose of navigation must be while the device is mounted or otherwise affixed to the vehicle and not held in the motorist's hand.

The meeting will be televised live on Capitol Television, which can be seen on Cox on Channels 15 and 61, on i3Broadband on Channel 15 and on Channel 34 by Verizon subscribers.  The meeting will also be live streamed at http://rilegislature.gov/CapTV/Pages/default.aspx.
